Buy-A-Brick SHACK

Namibia has a population of 2.7 million. However, over 500,000 live in unsafe, crowded, uncomfortable shacks. The Standard Bank Buy-a-Brick initiative was created to raise funds and assist in replacing the shacks with brick homes.

There are so many shacks visible in Namibia that people have become immune to their existence. So we brought the shacks to the people.

We erected temporary replica shacks in malls and at shows around the country. Construction was overseen by an architect, and only authentic materials were used.

Entrance to the shack was allowed after visitors made a donation to the Standard Bank Buy-a-Brick initiative.

Inside, visitors were shown items used in shacks, along with explanations detailing how these familiar objects are more than they appear. A recording of an actual shack dwelling was played back to add to the atmosphere.
